Car Engine Problems Including Seized Engines & Engine Failure – What Are The True Costs?

An engine failure is the most costly car repair job you might ever have to pay for.

Engine failure is usually very bad news and if the cost to repair or replace the engine is more than the resale value of your car or van, the investment really may not be worth it. Engine faults can include overheating, loss of power, misfiring, hard starting and unusual engine noises. General performance complaints can all be indications of problems that need immediate attention.

The major causes of engine failures are:

Overheating

Lack of lubrication

Detonation issues

Heat and friction are engine killers and therefore the coolant mechanism and engine lubrication must be kept in tiptop condition which will not only save you from the crushing expense of repairing a failed engine, but it will also guarantee smooth driving. The most severe engine problems including overheating due to lack of oil or coolant and the engine bearings becoming overheated. If the engine bearings fail, this will often lead to the engine becoming seized up.

Engines making a loud rattling or knocking noise are mostly due to the bearings failing – due to being either worn out or starved of oil. The knocking noise is the slack in the metallic parts hitting together as the tolerances have increased due to bearing wear.  Oil pump failure is very common on some models. This leads to the engine being starved of oil which will quickly destroy it. If the engine is run with very low or no oil pressure, any vehicle with the red oil lamp illuminated should be switched off and investigated immediately.

All engines require cambelts or timing chains. These are used to turn the camshaft and open valves in accurate timing with the crankshaft and pistons to facilitate combustion. Very often, these cambelts and timing chains snap or slip leading to a rotational conflict and damaging the mechanical parts within the engine. These failures are extremely expensive and require careful consideration before repairs commence as a replacement engine often required

So, there are a multitude of problems that may lead to a car engine’s complete failure, most of which are capable of bringing your car to a complete halt. What follows after that is towing of the car to a service station, where after a few anxious moments, you are informed about the engine seizure and are presented with a hefty bill, to get it back on road again.
