Land Rover and Range Rover Gearbox and IRD Issues
Four speed gearboxes have been used on the Land Rover since 1983 and although the LT95 was one of the strongest gearboxes in their history, they have not been without their issues. Land Rover, Range Rover and Defender owners should be aware that issues with the gearbox, or IRD, can cause major, and expensive problems for them.
Logistics of the Gearbox. The mainshaft is connected to an oil pump for lubrication and the oil filter strainer should be extracted and cleaned after each service. Most Land Rovers and Range Rovers have differentials that are locked by a vacuum operated system. When mechanics try to switch to a mechanical system from a vacuum system, complications often occur.
Fragile Components of the Gearbox. The most fragile component of the gearbox is the centre differential. The gearbox is often damaged in low traction situations especially when the differential lock is engaged. Though this poses a problem, experts suggest that the lock remain engaged even if there is a question regarding its proper engagement.
When problems arise, they are generally related to overheating that originates between the shafts or casing of the planetary gears. Mechanical failure typically follows after the overheating occurs. Extreme use will also cause the centre differential to fail. For instance, a driver may disengage the differential lock and engage the handbrake. Afterwards, the driver may force the engine to rev to 5,000 rpm. When the clutch drops, the front wheels will spin. This will have a negative effect and should not be attempted if the goal is to preserve the centre differential and gearbox.
The reverse idler gear is also considered to be a weak aspect of the gearbox. Full throttles and high engine speeds in reverse gear should be avoided to preserve this aspect of the gearbox. Experts also do not recommend “jerky” tow starts.
The splines on the inside of the transfer gear and on the rear of the mainshaft tend to wear easily. The wear manifests as excessive “backlash” in the transmission. If the splines wear out, the car will no longer operate properly. Many experts remove the PTO/overdrive cover to check the status of the transfer gear.
Shims will wear in the transfer box. To prevent this occurrence, re-shim them periodically. The transfer box must be removed to accomplish this. Problems in this category will also manifest in the transmission. The synchros may also wear out and require replacement. A problematic synchros will cause transmission backlash. The vehicle may slip out of gear and perform at a substandard rate.
