Transfer Box / IRD problems
A transfer box is a part of a four wheel drive system found in four wheel drive and all wheel drive vehicles. The transfer case is connected to the transmission and also to the front and rear axles by means of drive shafts. It is also referred to as a “transfer gearcase”, “transfer gearbox”, “IRD unit”or “transfer case”. A transfer case is unique to 4 wheel drive vehicles, and is what directs power to both ends (axles) of the vehicle through two separate driveshafts. You can tell if your transfer box or IRD Unit needs replacing because you will hear a clonking or grinding noise when you put your foot on, or take your foot off the accelerator, or when you turn corners, particularly in reverse. Transfer boxes on 4 wheel drive cars do break with the drive being lost to all wheels – these are very expensive to repair!
In most cases, damage to your transfer box or IRD unit is caused by not replacing the VCU in a timely manner. The VCU is a sealed unit, half way along your prop shaft, that contains a viscous fluid. Since this is a sealed unit it is not possible to check, or routinely change, the viscous fluid. Over time the viscous fluid in the VCU becomes thick and the prop shaft no longer rotates at the required speed. This puts tremendous strain on the drive train, and, if not replaced in a timely manner, will eventually cause damage to the rest of the drive train – such as your transfer box or IRD unit. (It is, therefore, recommended you change the VCU approximately every 70,000 miles)
