Turbo Charger problems
Most modern diesel cars and some petrol models also are fitted with a turbo charger unit that basically works using exhaust gas energy to to power a turbine within a compressor unit. This then charges the induction side of the engine, boosting inlet air pressure making a more powerful combustion and increased power output.
These turbo chargers often fail due to overheating mostly due to the oil ways being blocked by dirty engine oil. The bearings within the turbo shaft then becoming overheated and fail. Engine oil often bypasses into the turbo intercooler via the worn bearings, contaminating the whole induction system. The engine can sometimes pick up and run on this over supply of oil and over revving the engine to destruction.
Consideration must be taken before a new turbocharger is fitted as often there are more hidden costs other than a new unit. Turbocharger intercoolers that cool the hot turbo pressured air before induction are also fitted to most turbo cars and should be replaced when fitting a new turbo – along with all new induction pipes.
